Off the Island

A tour of Newtown Creek and environs in Queens and Brooklyn resulted in new knowledge and wonders for this Manhattanite, who rarely gets off the island, except on the way to the airport. Offered by the brilliant Open House NY program, the tour started near 5 Pointz, a street artists' community in Long Island City.

The Golden Age of Travel

Give me the days of putting on your best suit, hat and gloves to travel by airplane! A visit to JFK's dormant TWA terminal evokes a sense of wonder and fun that can't be found in any of today's airports. Designed by Eero Saarinen and opened in 1962, the terminal truly 'captures the spirit of flight' as intended by the architect. Not a detail was left to chance - from the tiles to the lightbulbs, from the departure board to the gutters. The terminal was in use through 2001, but thankfully not much was changed in those 40 years.

Again, my thanks to OHNY for the opportunity to visit the 1960s.
